Flexibility
Ever since starting at the City of Welland last year, it seems like there is a very limited amount of flexibility for its employees. One example is the freedom and ability to accommodate a change in work hours for union employees. It seems like the City is years behind terms in terms helping its employees better manage after or before work events (daycare for example). It seems like non-union employees have more freedom in terms of this. I understand that we must serve the public and maintain a high level of customer service, and union agreements come into play, but I think there should be some sort of corporate policy regarding this. I'm not talking about a dramatic change in work hours from 830-430 to 7-3, but a simple change for example to 8-4 that would benefit the employees after work life doesn't seem to inhibit any customer service or work. Especially if a colleague is able to work 830-430. If anything, it would increase public service by extending public service by half an hour (8-430). This is just one example and of course any decisions should be on a department by department basis (ensuring coverage etc). But it could be a corporate policy to allow more flexibility. I think it would also help retain and keep employees. I believe flexibility for employees is key moving forward, but public service and a high level of customer service must remain in tact. A nice equilibrium would be something to strive for.
I don't believe one thing leads to a better work culture. I think a collaboration of things leads to a better work culture. When a company's employees are physically, mentally and emotionally fit, it can transform a workplace. Something like wellness hours or days I believe would help employees. For example, Why do I have to use vacation time to go to a dentist appointment? This is the only place ive worked where ive had to do this. This is why I think the City is years behind in terms of things like this, and finds it hard to recruit and retain employees. I am not sure what non union employees have but it does seem like there is a large disconnect between these employees which inhibits the relationship between each other and limits the progression of a positive work culture.
Ideas or changes like this above can possibly help the City retain and keep employees while also maintaining a high level of customer service and work culture.
