The original Forks Road Bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 2018 due to corrosion and was removed in April 2019. As part of a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Welland, Empire Communities has committed to replacing the Forks Road Bridge as a cost-share project with the City. The City has been approved for Provincial and Federal funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program: Rural and Natural Stream initiative, which will significantly offset the City’s share of the project costs. The new Forks Road Bridge will be a two-lane, three-span bridge with eastbound and westbound bike lanes, and a pedestrian sidewalk on the north boulevard.

The bridge construction has made significant progress to date including the completion of all demolition works, preparation of the piers and abutments, and the commencement of the installation of the steel girders. Crews will continue work until the winter shutdown which is tentatively scheduled between December 2023 and March 2024 but is largely weather dependent. The bridge is on track for completion in August 2024.
